Play on road safety

-

Senior pupils at Arran’s seven primary schools were given a lesson with a difference last week, themed on road safety.

The P7 pupils were treated to a fun yet informative performance on road safety awareness as part of their preparation for their move to secondary school next year.

The performance, by Theatre@, took place on Tuesday, May 24, at Brodick Primary for pupils at Brodick, Corrie, Pirnmill and Shiskine primaries, and then moved onto Lamlash Primary in the afternoon for pupils at Lamlash, Whiting Bay and Kilmory.

The event was organised by North Ayrshire Council’s road safety officer in partnership with Road Safety Scotland. Titled ‘The Journey’, the interactive play highlighted key road safety messages about walking and cycling safely to school, as well as the transition from primary to secondary school and the peer pressure some may face when crossing the road.

Cabinet member for Ardrossan and Arran, Councillor Tony Gurney, said: ‘The play provided Arran’s youngsters with a great opportunity to think about road safety accidents, their causes and consequences.

‘As all of these pupils are about to make the transition to secondary school, we want to remind them of their personal responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others around them – regardless of social pressures.’
