Walking football steps up the pace

-

favourite pastime, football, has seen a rise in popularity with the formation of a youth football team and, on the opposite end of the spectrum, Arran Walking Football Group.

The walking football group is primarily aimed at over 55s and gives people the chance to enjoy the thrills and skills of football but without any running.

While running is not allowed, players are still able to take a dive to try and gain an advantage but with one of the oldest players approaching 70, this is not advised for everyone.

The ball is not allowed over head height so there is no heading and there is minimal contact in the game but the rules still allow players to work up a healthy sweat.

Twenty players have al- ready joined the group at the two sessions that have been held so far at the Auchrannie on Thursday nights at 7pm and numbers are steadily increasing.

During the first game scoring came slowly but as the players became accustomed to the rules and the game play the second match brought about some friendly competition which ended in a healthy score line of 10-9.

Games will be held during the summer and winter and players and spectators are invited to join the fun.

Organiser Ron Woods said: ‘People tend to scoff when you say ‘walking football’ but everyone who has given it a go and taken part will assure you of the enjoyment level and the quite serious workout that you experience. If you’re tempted, bring your on Thursdays from 7pm kit along and give it a go to 8pm at the Auchrannie or contact myself on ronwoods@sky.com.’
