Orienteering success for Arran pupils in Ayrshire
A team of 74 Arran students attended the annual Ayrshire Orienteering Cham- pionships at Dean Park, Kilmarnock, on Thursday, May 26.
Team Arran swept the board in several categories and Shiskine secured the Small Schools Trophy.
The championship, which saw 18 schools and more than 400 entrants compete, follows hot on the heels of the Arran Schools Championship where the top orienteering pupils were selected for the Arran team.
Orienteering, which has been organised in Ayrshire since the 1970s, is only in its second year on Arran but, despite the relatively recent participation in the sport, the pupils presented some challenging competition for those on the top of the leader board and in some cases even winning the category.
Team leader Andy McNamara, of the Arran Outdoor Centre, said: ‘Many thanks to the teachers of Arran and Archie McNicol for supporting orienteering on the island.’
The results of Team Arran are as follows: Individual: In the P4/5 girls category Abby Stewart and Beth McCarthy, Shiskine, took first place, Ruby Wright and Imogen Alison, Lamlash, took second place and Daisy Innes and Rhiannon Gardiner, Pirnmill, took third.
In the P6/7 boys category James McCarty and Donald Currie, Shiskine, took second place and in third were Callum Haddow and Zara Wilson, Brodick. In the S1/2/3 boys categories James Reid and Joe McHugh took first place, second went to Gregor Crichton and Kyle McNicol and third went to Liam Bremner and Charlie Bonner.
Team Arran High came first and third in the team events with the first team made up of James Reid and Joe McHugh, Gregor Crichton and Kyle McNicol and Liam Bremner and Charlie Bonner. The third place team was made up of Darren Hewie, Lewis MacVicar and Fierun Hunter.
Arran High took second place in the S1/2/3 girls category and they were made up of Ciara Wood and Abi Trail, Eilidh Hamill and Megan Duncan and Caitlin MacVicar.
