The Gang Show

No fewer than 15 groups of Guides, Scouts, Brownies, Rainbows and Beavers took part in The Gang Show in Lamlash Hall last Friday. The hall was packed with everybody just waiting to be entertained and to see their child performing on a very hot evening. For the most part each group did its own piece, some being taken from their performances at the music festival, many specially prepared for The Gang Show. Two notable items were the scouts singing The Circus of Barnum and bringing in the audience to sing along lustily with Pick a Bale of Cotton, led by Graham Tinto.

No Gang Show would be complete however without Riding Along on the Crest of a Wave and everybody came together on stage to sing this musical trademark of the scout movement. Baden Powell would have been proud of them all.

Centenary success

Last Saturday Shiskine Golf and Tennis Club was 100 years old and the club members were out in force to celebrate this. The day comprised three parts: the ceremony, the golf competition and the evening prizegiving, all of which greatly benefited from the best weather of the year so far.

After welcoming comments from Robert Waine, centenary captain Willie Kelso invited one of the most senior members, Johnnie Robertson, to raise the centenary flag which he did to the accompanying music of the Arran Pipe Band, who played throughout the ceremony.

Willie and ladies captain Pat Adamson drove from the first tee. With Pat going first, both sent magnificent straight drives down the fairway against a clear blue sky – much to Willie’s relief! Money raised by guessing the length of the drives (Pat 181 yards, Willie 194 yards) raised £300 for the pipe band funds.

A superb buffet lunch prepared by Margot Chaplin followed the unveiling of the commemorative plaque in the clubhouse. More than 100 visitors and local members, including many past captains, mingled in the sunshine before setting out to play the original nine-hole course which had been set out using existing and temporary greens.

Pier collision

The ferry collided with the pier when berthing at Brodick at 8am on Monday leaving a sizeable dent in her stern. On returning to Ardrossan, Board of Trade inspectors visited the ship and judged that the damage was only cosmetic. It was decided that any necessary repairs could wait until the annual overhaul, which will be in September.
