Brodick maintain winning streak

Brodick 7 Southend 2

Southend were given the biggest and most humiliating defeat of the past eight years by a rampant Brodick side at Ormidale Park on Monday night.

The visitors were missing a couple of key players and Brodick took full advantage, especially through their attacking prowess. Owen Quigley, better known as Pele, bagged a hat-trick, including a couple from some great runs and a header beyond goalkeeper Lee Russell. Pele linked up well with the league’s top goal scorer Archie McNicol who added another two onto his tally for the season.

McNicol’s speed kept the Southend defence on their toes throughout the game. Pele also became provider when he swung in a corner which was met by the head of young Alistair McMillan who scored his second goal of the season. Southend’s frustration showed as central midfielders Ryan Armstrong and Donald Park both received yellow cards for persistent fouling. Gregor Adamson was also given a caution by referee Iain McDonald for handling outside his area.

Armstrong bagged two consolation goals for Southend, one of which being a powerful strike past Adamson. Toby Wingham also scored for Brodick with, for the second week in a row, a man of the match performance. He dominated the midfield, showing both skill and strength to outplay his opponents.

After the first round of fixtures, Brodick now looks like the hot favourites to make it three league titles in a row after scoring 29 goals and only conceding five.

Lamlash 3 Shiskine 0

Lamlash moved into second place in the league on Monday as they triumphed in a tough game against Shiskine at the back of the high school. The away team were missing their goalkeeper, Finlay Murchie, so Stevie Crawford was called into action but unfortunately he suffered an injury early on.

Last season’s Arran footballer of the year runner up, Danny Currie, opened his account for the season scoring the first goal before the Lamlash top goal scorer, James Todd. took advantage and was on target to bag his seventh of the season. PE teacher Jack Simmons, who is sadly leaving the island, scored in what could be his final game for Lamlash to round off the scoring at 3-0.

Willie Sillars picked up his second yellow card of the season with a foul on Sean Higgins. John Murchie also received his third yellow of season to earn himself a ban in his next match against Southend.

Fraser Anderson got a caution too. The game finished with fireworks as David McAllister came on with 10 minutes to go for Lamlash and got booked twice in quick succession to be sent off. A red card has been all too familiar to Big Dave, who was playing his first game for a couple of years. Referee Jean Demazeux handled the game very well and gave man of the match to goal scorer Danny Currie.

On Monday the fixtures will see Shiskine vs Southend and Lamlash vs Northend, both games starting at 6.30pm.
