Elderly visit the Kelpies
Last month 42 members of the Arran Elderly Forum enjoyed a day of sunshine when the group visited the Kelpies at Falkirk, writes Helen Kerr.
Thanks to a grant from North Ayrshire Council, via Arran Community Volunteers Services, the forum was able to hire a coach which was free to all participants.
Members of the forum were asked particularly to invite friends who would not make such a trip on their own, or who perhaps do not get off the island very often, as the coach allowed for additional space for people to enjoy the outing.
Once at their destination, some of the less agile members sat in the new centre with a cup of coffee while looking out at the amazing sculptures, while others went for a walk themselves or took the guided tour.
After an enjoyable couple of hours and a requisite browse round the centre’s souvenir shop, the group visited Falkirk High Street where members all went their separate ways to explore and find suitable eateries.
The day provided many with an enjoyable day out although some did find the heat rather exhausting. Once onboard the return ferry, the gentle breeze was much appreciated.
The elderly forum’s next meeting is on Wednesday, July 20 at 11am but most meet 20 minutes earlier for a cuppa before the meeting starts. The speaker will be Evelyn Gilchrist, who is from Ayrshire Independent Living Network, and she will speak on self-directed support. Any over-55s are most welcome to join.
