Lamlash lift eight trophies at SWI Federation Show

Lamlash SWI were the biggest winners at this year’s Arran SWI Federation handicraft show which was held last Wednesday at the community theatre in Lamlash

As reported in last week’s Banner, a huge 460 entries were received this year from the five institutes on the island.

Taking top spot was Lamlash with eight trophies, including the best Community Tray and the Best in Show which was won by Alison Thompson, Kildonan lifted seven, Shiskine took six and Corrie and Sannox and Kilmory each took one.

The theme of this year’s event was Alice in Wonderland and the Mad Hatters Tea Party. Show convenor Nancy Bremner and president Anne Pringle presented the trophies at a prizegivin­g ceremony and thanked everyone for their contributi­ons and for the large amount of baby knitwear produced by the institutes and donated to the neonatal unit at Crosshouse hospital every year.

The full results were as follows: Trophy donated by the late Duchess of Montrose for best Community Tray, (class 19), Lamlash SWI. Trophy donated by the late Dr James Buchanan for Institute gaining most points in show, Shiskine SWI. Trophy donated by the late Miss E Ferguson, Lamlash for best entry in handcraft sections, Alison Thompson, Lamlash SWI. The Jean Anderson Memorial Tray for runner up to best entry in handcraft sections, (class 3A), Mary Adams, Lamlash SWI. Trophy donated by the late Mrs J Petrie, Lamlash, for most points gained by an Institute with 20 or fewer members, Kildonan SWI. Margaret Haddow Trophy for community handcrafts, (class 18), Shiskine SWI. 7 The Mary W McGarrity Memorial Trophy, donated by the late Mr J McGarrity, Corrie, for competitor gaining most points in handcraft sections, Nancy Bremner, Kildonan SWI. Isle of Arran Federation Trophy for competitor gaining most points in baking section, (class 20), Eleanor MacKinnon, Kilmory SWI.

Trophy donated by the late Mrs H Mitchell for competitor gaining most points in Class 21, Alice Anderson, Shiskine SWI. Trophy donated by the late Mrs M Frew for Institute with 25 or fewer members gaining most points in class 19, Kildonan SWI.

Trophy donated by Arran Provisions for member gaining most points in class 17 – four item – Jenny Harper, Shiskine SWI. Kilmory Trophy donated by the late Mrs Dale, Corriecrav­ie for most points gained in class 15, Art, Kathleen Sowden, Lamlash SWI. Queen’s Jubilee Trophy donated by Mrs Elma Stevenson, (class 5B, Canvas Work), Angela Cassels, Shiskine SWI.

The Rachel Trophy donated by Betty Bremner, Lamlash in memory of her sister Ray Bremner, for best knitted article in show (class 1), Morag Gardner, Lamlash SWI. Brenda Waddell Trophy for best knitted soft toy, (class 6b), Nancy Bremner, Kildonan SWI. The Helen MacAlister Quaich for best thrift article (class 12), Nancy Bremner, Kildonan SWI. Magazine Trophy, Atresanio Harmonia Shrug, (class 10), Nancy Bremner, Kildonan SWI. Literature Prize, (class 13e), Anne Pringle, Corrie and Sannox SWI. Marvin Elliott Trophy for baby jacket knitted in two or three ply (class 1I), Morag Gardner, Lamlash SWI.

The Nan Murchie Memorial Rose Bowl, (class 15A), Kathleen Sowden, Lamlash SWI. Joan Crawley Trophy for best entry embroidery (class 4), Angela Cassels, Shiskine SWI.

The Gardner Trophy donated by Morag Gardner, runner-up to best in show, Helen and Sarah Good, Kildonan SWI. Best In Show, Corrie and Sannox Trophy donated by Anne Pringle, Alison Thompson, Lamlash SWI.
