Allan takes Lamlash Open title against a strong field

-

The 33rd annual Lamlash Open attracted a large turnout of more than 113 entrants who took part in the open competition held last weekend. On Saturday golfing began at 8am with the last game scheduled for 5pm to accommodate a well-know visitor who was arriving on the 3.20pm ferry.

The weekend weather was mostly enjoyed by all apart from the late starters who experienced the worst conditions on both days. Wind Saturday, rain Sunday.

The course received many compliments; the green staff presenting a superb course with slick greens where three putting became a common feature for some, probably assisted by the strong gusts of wind. A scratch player on Saturday scored 65 while on Sunday 76 – perhaps influenced by Saturday celebrations – however he began well but it was three holes 10 to 12 on the back nine which blotted his card.

Every hole on both days was sponsored by members and local business which the club thanked at the prize giving ceremony along with sponsors of the event; Arran Domestic, Brewers, Drift Inn, Pierhead Tavern and Lamlash Bay Hotel.

During the day the charity Smile of Arran visited the club on their walk around the island where they were assisted by member Ian Hutchison who helped raise more than £500 for their charity.

On Sunday evening the clubhouse had a capacity audience for the presentation which was ably presented by Captain Stuart Campbell, with other members of the committee being congratulated for the fine organisation of the Open event.

The weekend was rounded off with Tom’s disco which was enjoyed into the wee hours. The dates of the 2017 Open will be Friday August 4 to Sunday August 6.
