Reducing Arran’s waste can be fun

-

Zero Waste Week Arran is coming soon and Eco Savvy is preparing a week of fantastic events.

There will be a social evening with some fun crafting, eco-style, a swap shop for clothes and accessories with up-cycling repair and remake workshop, and a beach clean.

For the main events this year, Eco is hosting the Big Green Footprint in Whiting Bay Hall on Thursday September 15.

The Big Green Footprint (BGF) takes people on an environmental journey through the ages, leading to today and the use of plastic bottles. Visitors will meet some interesting historical characters on the way.

They will tell a little about changes which happened during their lifetime and discuss some of the impacts these changes made on lives and the environment. When your journey arrives at the plastic bottle you will have choices to make and different paths to follow.

North Ayrshire Council waste awareness staff will be there to explain exactly what happens to the contents of blue bins and introduce the ‘right bin’ leaflets for Arran.

Workshops

The BGF is supported by an exhibition of work from up-cyclers around the island and includes a variety of great workshops, competitions and challenges, something for everyone.

A similar event is repeated in Brodick Hall on Saturday September 17.

Working with Eco, the council, Arran Community Land, COAST and local businesses, the promise is that reducing your waste will be fun.

All Arran businesses and community spaces are invited by Eco Savvy to display a clear vinyl window sticker showing where drinking water bottles can be refilled.

The aim is to reduce the amount of single-use plastic on the island by encouraging everyone to use a refillable water bottle.

The initiative begins with a primary school competition to design the window stickers, and all entries will be on display at the BGF exhibitions in Whiting Bay and Brodick, where a panel of judges will choose the overall winner and winners from each age group.

If you love up-cycling and would like to exhibit your work at these events, contact arran.ecosavvy@gmail.com or call 700411.
