Improved MyBus service hits the road

-

Stagecoach has taken over the operation of the MyBus service which now offers a new Sunday service, a new larger capacity bus and extended operating hours during peak times.

The move follows last year’s announcement from Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) that it would look to expand the service. The decision has resulted in a MyBus service that is now available seven days a week with the service being promoted by SPT and through their website. Information leaflet are also available at doctors surgeries throughout the island and other public buildings. There are no age, ability or benefit restrictions and it can be used for GP appointments, visiting friends and even for doing your shopping or visiting local interest groups and clubs. Previously run by the Red Cross, the service was taken over by SPT who have now awarded the contract to Stagecoach.

The bookable door-todoor bus service, specially designed for rural communities, offers anyone a public transport service outwith normal bus service times and for those in areas with poor transport links. MyBus operates from Monday to Saturday from 9am to 10pm during April to October and from 9am to 6pm during November through to March. The expanded Sunday service is available from 9am to 6pm. Travel must be booked at least a day in advance and for Sunday travel, bookings need to be made on the preceding Thursday. For Monday travel, bookings must be made on Friday since the booking lines are closed on a Saturday and Sunday. While MyBus previously operated as a free service, normal bus fares now apply with the usual concessions and entitlements, which cover most users. Stagecoach do not have a dedicated MyBus now, but use one of the four Optare buses on the island which are wheelchair friendly and operate with a low floor.

SPT recommend that you register your details with them prior to booking which will allow for quicker bookings in the future and means they are aware of any special requirements. Passengers can also register for the service by filling in a form and those recognised as requiring support from any social care group can receive assistance from AIMS advocacy who will assist people over 16 years old to complete the paperwork.

An SPT spokeswoman said: ‘Operation of the MyBus service has transferred to Stagecoach as part of a wider package of improvements, including the introduction of a Sunday ser- vice for the first time and extended hours of operation during the peak April to October season. The MyBus service is open to anyone who wishes to use it, simply phone up and book your place.’
