Evacuation after Brodick flooding
A Brodick pensioner had to be evacuated from his flooded house in Douglas Place last Thursday by firefighters attended to a localised flooding incident.
William Innes, who lives in one of the row of 20 sandstone houses which were originally built around 1850, was taken by his relatives to nearby Montrose House after four inches of water flowed through his living room and through his house.
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service who attended, dealt with the source of the problem, a small four inch drainage pipe which was overwhelmed by the volume of rainwater during Storm Do- ris, which brought rain and snow across the island.
Pumping out a flooded gully connected to the drainage pipe they averted further disaster to the remainder of the residents by displacing hundreds of gallons of flood water.
A fire service spokesman said: ‘The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 10.51am on Thursday February 23 to reports of flooding affecting a residential property at Douglas Place.
An appliance was immediately mobilised and firefighters pumped water clear of the building entrance. The crew left at 11.43am after ensuring the area was made safe.’
Last year three houses further down the row of semidetached houses also sustained serious water damage after the drainage channel toward the rear of the properties could not cope with a particularly heavy deluge.
