Common sense prevails

-

In our modern-day world where fastidious bean counting and bureaucracy can sometimes seem to be the order of the day, isn’t it reassuring to see that common sense can still prevail?

We refer to the letter (right) from Alistair Hamilton of Kildonan who has had public water leaking onto his land for eight years, but after an article in The Banner back in January, describing the waste and the complicated issue of responsibility, the situation has now finally been resolved.

From out of the murky depths of the convoluted issue of responsibility, a saviour in the form of Scottish Water has stepped forward to resolve the impasse and for that they deserve due credit. They knew full well that while the discussion over responsibility continued, so did the wastage. While having no obligation to remedy it at their cost, and even with having the power to enforce legal action, they curtailed the leak and after eight long years rectified the situation in the space of 24 hours.

Some might call it the power of the press, others might call it an avoidance of negative publicity, but what we all know is that somewhere in the upper echelons of Scottish Water, a sensible decision was made to put an end to the ridiculous situation.

We are pleased for Mr Hamilton and glad to have been of assistance in this matter as we are always pleased to help.

After all, that is one of the many perks of living on Arran, where we can enjoy a life relatively unshackled by the vagaries of bureaucracy and where familiar traits such as common courtesy, common sense and neighbourliness still do exist, and are valued and appreciated.

Well done Scottish Water for taking the initiative, resolving the issue and restoring our faith in common sense.
