Brodick Co-op shows its support for Arran foodbank

Corrie customers pitch in with donation too

-

Brodick Co-op has donated a freezer and savings stamp to the Arran Churches Together Foodbank.

It is also continuing to collect food items for the charity in a collection basket in the store.

The savings stamps are a donation from the Corrie Club which regularly meets at the Co-op for tea and coffee. Members thought the donation to the foodbank would be appreciated in recognition of the kindness shown to them by the Co-op.

Rev Angus Adamson said: ‘I would, of course, like to thank Liz McLean and Carol Harwood and their team at Brodick Co-op for their continued support of our work with the foodbank, both with the donations basket in the store and now with the gift of a freezer. The foodbank continues to be run from Brodick Church front porch and is open for people to collect food as-and-when required and for others to leave donations of food at any time.

‘The porch is checked daily to ensure a stock of essential items is on hand for people to collect in person and for any excess food donated to be stored for future use in the locked church transept. The social services department also use the transept and can access food at any time for those who need it.

‘One on-going problem is we constantly run out of meat products.

‘But the new freezer will give us the option of providing such items and should help overcome this difficulty.

‘It is hoped the donation of Co-op saving stamps gifted by the Corrie Club will be used to provide initial stock for the new freezer, which is very much appreciated.

‘Currently we are also short of tinned fruit and vegetables, although we seem we have a surplus of pasta.

‘We are extremely grateful to everyone who has donated food in the past. The huge mountain of food gifted in the run-up to Christmas is well depleted, all food donated going to island families and those in need locally. Twenty five families received an additional Christmas food parcel.

‘Thanks to Tracey Mutch we have, over and above our normal long-life foodstuffs, been able to supply fresh eggs and hope in future to be able to provide fresh island grown fruit and vegetables.’
