The Arran Banner

Classic to rock – it’s on at PHT

- Hugh Boag editor@arranbanner.co.uk

Arran Music Society and The Pierhead Tavern recently welcomed a group of young musicians from The Netherlands.

The Nescio Ensemble is a young, versatile and passionate string orchestra consisting of friends brought together by their love of music. Over the past five years, they have visited many beautiful places in Europe to play music and their Arran visit was the first of their Scottish tour.

The ensemble consists of both professional musicians and amateurs of a very high level. All their concerts and tours are not for profit as playing in the ensemble provides the musicians with an opportunity to play a repertoire that they love, together with their friends. This creates an invaluable energy, which is conveyed in their performances.

One the Saturday night, in the high school, Nescio played a beautiful chamber music repertoire prepared and chosen by the musicians themselves, while on the Sunday afternoon at the PHT their music including pieces from Bartok, Mozart and Shostakovich. Local fiddler Bethany Welsh joined the young people to showcase traditional pieces from the last century.

Over the next two weekends the PHT are welcoming back two of the island’s well-loved bands, Badstone, which play very well known rock and pop songs, play tonight (Saturday) and an acoustic set tomorrow afternoon. Next weekend Two Bob Rocket will entertain with a hugely eclectic playlist including rock, blues and punk songs.

On Sunday May 14 at 4pm, sensational harpist Heather Macleod joins forces with John Van B on percussion to create a mellow sound of mixed genres on the electro harp (the angel) in this new collaboration called The Fat Man & The Angel.

Young musicians of all abilities are welcome to play at The PHT either as a warm-up before the main act or during their Sunday celebration of young musician sessions on July 2, August 13 , October 29 and December 24.
