Northend comeback stuns Shiskine

- By Danny Head

Northend produced their best performance for many a year to come back and stun Shiskine with a lastgasp winner.

In windy conditions, Northend started well and, after a rash tackle from William Sillars inside the box, took the lead via the spot with Andy McNamara slotting home well.

Shiskine quickly equalised via William Sillars making up for his mistake but Northend fought back and a great through ball saw Andy McNamara one on one and slotting home past the Shiskine keeper. Almost straight away, Shiskine equalised after a defensive mix up, with Donald Mulholland getting on the score sheet.

Northend then looked vulnerable and had goalkeeper Stuart Lawson to thank for an inspired performance, constantly keeping the Shiskine shots out and showing great handling skills.

The score was 2-2 at halftime. After the break Shiskine looked most likely, although Northend always threatened on the counter. Shiskine’s pressure paid off when Cameron Thomson drilled home after a good move and perhaps expected Northend to crumble.

Hard but fair tackles were taking place as both teams battled against each other and the elements.

Shiskine’s free kicks and corners were defended well as Northend battled hard and were rewarded on 75 minutes when Jack McNally gave away a free kick about 35 yards out. After initially clearing the ball, the resulting cross back in landed at young Ross Trail’s feet and he made no mistake from six yards.

Again Shiskine looked more likely for the last period and threw in free kicks and corners, with Sillars always looking dangerous as he pushed forward.

In the 90th minute, Shiskine had another corner and threw men forward to try to get the three points. However, the ball was cleared and fell to McNamara who combined well on the left and sent a swinging pass across the pitch which was touched through by Cameron Logan. With just the keeper to beat, he hit the target and, although it looked a straightforward save, the ball somehow ended up in the net, sparking jubilant scenes with one young fan running onto the pitch.

After order was restored the game restarted and the final whistle sounded and a dejected Shiskine shook hands with the ecstatic Northenders.

Man of the match was Stuart Lawson in goal and John Ferguson was shown the only yellow card.
