Brodick Primary pupils proved they are map masters by winning the Arran Schools Orienteering Championship.

It was the young navigators’ second consecutive victory after winning last year.

Last week more than 150 pupils, from every point of the island, used map and compass to find their way around Brodick Country Park in the timed race.

Children searched the expansive and manicured gardens of Brodick Castle which were bathed in bright sunlight and in full bloom as the children searched for controls and marked them off on their cards.

Two volunteers, Tom and Davy Nichol from the Ayrshire Orienteering Club, assisted with the running of the competition, which saw three new course records being set by Myles Lindsay-Smith and Harrison Ross, Julie Hamill and Abby Stewart and Charlie Bonner.

Pupils who excelled in the various age groups were encouraged to attend the Ayrshire Schools Championship which takes place later in the month on Thursday May 25 at Fullarton woods, Troon.

At the end of the day, a prizegiving ceremony was held where the top three of each category – P4/ P5 open and girls; P6/P7 open and girls and S1/S2 open and girls – were awarded medals and certificates.

The school earning the most points won the championship trophy, with Brodick clinching it from Whiting Bay, who won it in its inaugural year.

Organiser of the championship, Andy McNamara, thanked sponsors – The Arran Outdoor Centre and Brodick Castle and Country Park – and all of the participants and marshals who took part, making the event such a success.

The results were as follows; P4/5 Girls: 1 Kaitlyn Haddow and Annie McKelvie, 2 Kirsty Hume and Lily Keir, 3 Annie West and Rosie Wilkinson.
