Junior triathletes bring home the medals in spring aquathlon
Thirteen young triathletes from Arran Junior Triathlon Club travelled to Prestwick to take part in the Spring Aquathlon.
It wasn’t long before the first podium position was achieved by Grace Popplewell.
Grace showed immense determination and was rewarded with first place in the Tristar Girl’s race.
Luke Goatley and Gregor Gunaydi took the start line next, cheered on by their supporters. The Tri 1’s were next to complete the sunny course with Rhea Webster achieving a fantastic race time of 8 minutes, 7 seconds.
The Tri 1 Boys race was tense to the last moments, with Jack Popplewell crossing the line in 7 minutes, 58 seconds, followed closely by Myles Lindsay-Smith and Ben McCarthy with a joint time of 8 minutes, 1 second. As the sun continued to shine, the cheers for the Tri 2 Girls Julie Hamill, Beth McCarthy, Erin McNiven and Layla Webster were heard from every corner and curve of the course.
Julie Hamill came out of the swim section in fourth place and achieved a new personal best of 13 minutes, 18 seconds.
The day was not to be finished off quietly, with Ruaridh Lindsay-Smith and James McCarthy taking on the Tri 2 Boys race.
Ruaridh Lindsay-Smith provided the final celebration of the day with a third place spot on the podium.
With the clock ticking and not a lot of time to make the next boat, the trophy winners made the decision to miss the prizegiving to dash for the ferry. With a little moment to spare, Grace Popplewell hopped on the podium to be presented with her trophy, surrounded by fellow athletes and supporters.
The triathletes are already training hard for the Island 2 Island Triathlon Festival, which will take place on Saturday June 3. The event is being organised to raise funds to enable the club to let children join and participate for free.
