Arran shine in youth football tournament
An unbeaten Arran select team of S1 and S2 pupils took the honours in a fourteam tournament at the Ormidale Park in Brodick last Saturday.
Playing in a friendly competition against Eastwood Juveniles and two teams from Campbeltown FC, Arran High School outclassed their opponents and took the overall trophy in the 11-a-side matches where they were unbeaten in every game. Indeed, Arran only conceded two goals due to the brilliant performances of goalkeeper Liam Bremner.
In the final, Campbeltown B faced Arran with Campbeltown opening the scoring, but Arran quickly equalised with a strike from Joe McHugh, who excelled himself throughout the tournament.
After half-time Arran managed to score another, from player of the tournament Gregor Crichton, who directed the ball right into the bottom right hand corner of the net. Arran from then held on for a fairly comfortable 2-1 win.
Captain James Reid did a brilliant job to score two goals throughout the whole tournament despite being in a centre back position throughout the game. Sid Townsend managed to bag a goal for himself in one of the earlier games, and Pawel Gren also added to his score-sheet with a strike in the top corner.
The Brodick FC young duo Kyle McNicol and Lachlan Campbell did a fantastic job in the midfield holding the ball up throughout the games and young McNicol got a goal for himself too. Jack Gillingham managed to get on the score-sheet too.
Coach Ross Dobson, who was assisted by Finlay Aherne, said: ‘Well done to all of the teams that took part – Eastwood Juveniles, Campbeltown A and Campbeltown B – and a massive well done to the brand new Arran High School S1/2 team.’
