Tempers flare at old rivals’ match
Lamlash hosted old rivals Brodick on Monday night in splendid weather conditions, although the sun made life difficult for both teams in each half and offfield altercations cast a shadow over the game.
Brodick opened the scoring on the 10-minute mark as stand-in defender Babbies MacNeil scored from all of 70 yards, as his clearance eluded David Heenan in goal, after a wicked bounce caught out the Lamlash stopper. The three-man strike force of Archie McNicol, Iain Keen and Greg McCrae had chances to extend the lead but failed to convert. After this Lamlash had two glorious chances through Grant Adamson to level but his first attempt crept wide and the second hit the bar.
As tempers flared, referee Andy McNamara did well to control things after an altercation on the sidelines between two Lamlash supporters and three Brodick players for which three yellow cards were issued. Brodick tried to defend the lead till half-time but a mistaken back pass from Babbies fell to Grant Adamson who finished on his second attempt as Greigor Adamson tried in vain to stop it. Against the run of play perhaps, Brodick went 2-1 up after an Archie McNicol corner was flicked in by Mark Halliday, although Archie tried to claim it later.
From the second half restart Lamlash only looked
like scoring from corners as Jamie Sillars tried for his third straight goal from one this season. Arran football veteran Greg McCrae then rolled back the years to finish two well worked goals to make it 4-1 before Lamlash pulled one back with the hard-working Sean Higgins blasting home from 12 yards. There was no mistaking Archie McNicol’s fifth goal for Brodick as he cut in and finished well to make it 5-2. A rash tackle on Archie then gave him another chance to score from the spot but amazingly he gave the ball to McCrae who fancied a hat-trick. Sadly for Greg, David Heenan saved well but Mark Halliday was on hand to knock in the rebound and give the Jingly Jangly men some breathing space and see out the game.
Andy Thomson was given the man of the match award for the second week running after another fine display in the midfield.
Shiskine’s dismal form continued and they still wait for their first win of the season. The visitors made life difficult for Southend, though, as the first half finished goalless.
The breakthrough was made early in the second half when a corner was met by former Southend player Alan Dillon.
The ball struck him without knowing much about it and unfortunately went into his own net. Secuna Junior then made it 2-0 to the home side with a low powerful strike into the corner.
Shiskine were rewarded for their hard work when a long punt from goalkeeper Finlay Murchie caught Danny Head out at centre back and Cameron ‘Cammy’ Thomson latched onto a header putting it over the keeper’s head. Fraser Gilbert then went into a goalscoring spree from the left wing.
He scored a hat-trick in the last third of the game after making some great break through runs in the Shiskine penalty area to take his goal tally up to seven for the season.
Referee Ian ‘Loci’ McDonald gave young central midfielder Finlay Elliot of Shiskine the man of the match award as he played well beyond his years with some hard tackling and good awareness on the ball.
The fixtures for Monday July 24 will see Lamlash vs Southend at 6.30pm and Northend taking on Shiskine at 7pm.
