Lord-Lieutenant Duncan retires
The Lord-Lieutenant of Ayrshire and Arran, John L Duncan CVO, QPM, has retired after 11 years in post.
Born October 15, 1942, in Buckie, Banffshire, he retired on his 75th birthday last Sunday. He lives in Stewarton with his wife Jess and has a grown-up son and two daughters and has, over the years, been a regular visitor to Arran.
He left Buckie High School in 1957 and was an apprentice engineer with a local firm before begin- ning his long police career. From 1959 to 2001, he served in Renfrew and Bute Constabulary and Strathclyde Police in all ranks from cadet to deputy chief constable. From the rank of inspector to chief superintendent, he held territorial command in a wide variety of policing environments, including North, South and East Ayrshire.
As chief superintendent and above, in addition to divisional command, he held the positions of head of complaints and discipline, head of force inspectorate, head of personnel, assistant chief constable (personnel), assistant chief constable (operations) and deputy chief constable.
In December 2001, he was appointed a deputy for the Lieutenancy of Ayrshire and Arran and, five years later, was appointed Lord-Lieutenant.
Vice Lord-Lieutenant John Dalrymple Hamilton, OBE, TD, will undertake the duties of the Lord-Lieutenant until a new appointee is announced.
