In memory of Beano

-

Sir, My little dog Beano died on October 9 and I wish to inform her many Arran friends that she has gone.

Beano, or the Bean, as she was called by some, lived with me for nearly 12 years. She was the first of six dogs who have lived with me and no family present to share her.

In Whiting Bay she was well known for being vocal, an excellent guard dog, yet when I was out and she was at home she did not bark as she was really guarding me.

Thanks to the friends who gave her treats. Among them the posters, the refuse collectors, the folk who stopped at the gate and those whose houses she visited with the sole purpose of receiving a biccy.

Her life on Arran was adventurous. In her younger days she sailed in the Clyde, often falling into the sea from the dinghy in her haste to reach land.

Goatfell and many of the other beinns were conquered by her. It was good to reach the summits where folk tended to be eating! Being a miniature schnauzer she required regular trimming. Joyce and Andre always made her look stunning, tho she never appreciated the times she spent with them.

Malcolm Wheeler was there for her on the few occasions that she was unwell. I shall always be grateful to Arran Vets who have treated her recently.

On Sunday Hugh and Holly Simon came to the surgery within an hour of being telephoned and they helped Beano in a professional and very kind way. There was no stress or pain for my wee dog. She slipped away, in seconds.

If I were younger, I would think of having another dog. I am not going to but will always have an open door for canine visitors.

Yours,

Anne Hodge Whiting Bay
