Ferry terminal built using Arran stone
JOHN Thomson Construction Ltd of Arran has been involved with the redevelopment of Brodick Ferry Terminal from the start, in January 2016.
As a construction, engineering and quarrying company with more than 60 years’ experience on the Island, John Thomson Construction was an obvious fit with the project, supplying more than 35,000 tonnes of quarry materials to main contractor George Leslie Ltd.
Hardcore material quarried from the company’s Dereneneach Quarry on the String Road, near Shiskine, meant there was no need to ferry in thousands of tonnes of aggregate by sea at huge extra cost to Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL), the over-all client.
The ability to produce materials and different grades to order ensured flexibility during the different stages of the project.
John Thomson Construction’s concrete plant in Market Road, Brodick allowed an efficient and local supply of 11,000 cubic metres of concrete to the new ferry terminal.
The contract provided a boost to the Island’s economy and allowed John Thomson Construction to take on more island employees to add to its usual complement of 30-40 staff.
Managing director Iain Thomson said: ‘The contract was a very welcome boost to the Island and created a lot of extra employment for Islanders.
‘George Leslie Ltd were an excellent company to work with and we’d welcome the opportunity to work with them again.’
