Get ready for plenty of madness at Our House

- Hugh Boag editor@arranbanner.co.uk

There’s a whole lot of madness coming to Arran High School.

The school’s end of term musical production for 2018 is Our House, a musical with music and lyrics by ska/pop band Madness.

Rehearsals are well under way, with students now rehearsing weekly and even committing their evenings and weekends to ensure their show is, as always, professional and polished.

It has been two years since the emotional roller coaster story Sunshine

on Leith was staged at the Lamlash Community Theatre, and Our House is not set to disappoint.

This year, the community is working alongside Ayrshire-based Steven J Swan, a professional creative who will lead on the direction and overall production of the show.

Based in 1980s Camden Town, Our House tells the story of London lad Joe Casey, who, on the night of his 16th birthday, takes Sarah, the girl of his dreams, out on their first date.

In an effort to impress her with bravado, he breaks into a building site overlooking his home on Casey Street.

The police turn up, at which point Joe’s life splits into two: the Good Joe, who stays to help, and Bad Joe, who flees.

Through the music of Madness, writer Tim Firth explores the themes of love, family values, growing up, responsibility and dealing with losing the people that shape us. It also features a collection of the band’s biggest hits, including House of Fun, Baggy Trousers, Driving in my Car, It Must Be Love and, of course, Our House.

This very British musical is sure to be a sell out. Shows are 7.30pm nightly from June 19 to 22 in Lamlash Community Theatre.

Tickets can be bought from Arran High School or The Book & Card Centre, Brodick. Tickets are priced £8 for adults and £6 for children attending school.
