Keeping villages in full bloom on Arran
Green-fingered community champions have started planting summer flowers in Arran villages.
Following North Ayrshire Council’s decision to stop maintaining flower pots on the island, Arran Community Council secured a grant from the Arran Trust to ensure villages are kept in full bloom, as previously reported in the Banner
With the help of Eleanor McCue of Eleanor’s Flowers, who organised the planting schemes and ordered flowers, each village association will plant and water the black tubs throughout the island.
Sowing the seeds of the initiative for other Arran groups, members of Lamlash Improvements Association have been out in force planting out the summer flowers in the tubs along the village green.
Chairman Timothy Billings said: ‘This is a real team effort across the island. A real thank you to everyone involved. As we were planting, we were delighted at the number of people who stopped to chat about the scheme. It really made us feel it was worthwhile doing.’
There are 75 tubs in villages throughout the island, however, following budget cuts the council said it was no longer able to maintain them and it will now be up to each village to look after them.
At a recent community council meeting, special thanks were extended to Eleanor for her support for the project.
