Octopus reaches out to volunteers

-

The Community of Arran Seabed Trust (COAST) has recently opened the doors to the first community-led Marine Protected Area (MPA) visitor centre – the Octopus Centre.

However, it is in need of willing volunteers to greet visitors at reception, look after the shop and show visitors aspects of the displays.

COAST volunteer Alan Bellamy said: ‘I love volunteering at the Octopus Centre; it’s great to meet lots of visitors and to help them find out about the MPA and all the wonderful marine wildlife around the island.’

This is a great opportunity to get involved with an exciting new project on the island, with the added reward of contributing to healthy and productive seas. Meet new people and help inspire the future generations of marine conservationists.

Fellow volunteer Ann Hume added: ‘I enjoy seeing the wide eyes of children when they spot something in the marine tank. It’s great to encourage their enthusiasm.’

If anyone is interested in volunteering at the Octopus Centre, please get in touch with info@arrancoast.com, call 01770 600656 or pop by the centre, next to Lamlash tennis courts.

No prior knowledge is required as all necessary training is given by existing volunteers or staff.

COAST also invites everyone to the official opening of the Octopus Centre on Saturday September 22 from 1.30pm for an afternoon of celebration, including the 10th anniversary of the Lamlash Bay No Take Zone.
