Football furore

Football may only be a game but tempers can run high. Following last Saturday’s Cup Final between Shiskine and Cameronia, the losing team, Cameronia, feel they have been badly treated and are demanding loudly that there be a replay. Played at Brodick, Shiskine won the match by three goals to two. There does not appear to have been any ill feeling between players but the Cameronia team, initially unhappy that the referee was a former Shiskine player, felt as the game progressed that his decisions were not always seen to be fair. The referee is an experienced referee trained to Scottish Football Association standards and feels that he is comfortable with the task and the decisions he made.

Despite this the Arran Banner has received numerous letters and a call from one of the team sponsors, all asking for the game to be replayed. Chairman of Arran Football Association Brian Smith has made no comment yet, however, a replay could be a dangerous precedent and as one former committee member said: ‘It’s terribly bad for Arran football.’

School bus crash

Yesterday an accident took place between a school bus and another vehicle. The ac- cident occurred on a tight bend just north of Sannox, with the high school’s northend bus colliding with a North Ayrshire minibus.

Although none of the pupils were injured, the other driver was trapped initially in the wrecked minibus. Luckily she was not seriously injured, and there was a doctor on hand to help until the emergency services arrived. One eyewitness said that the pupils deserved credit having remained calm throughout. Also deserving of credit was Iain Hendry who kindly offered to transport the pupils back home.

Banner marriage

One of our subscribers, a Buddhist on Holy Isle, does not get his Banner until the following Friday, such is the mail on Holy Isle, but he enjoys it when he does.

So much so that when he wanted to give a gift to a visitor, who had spent time on Holy Isle, he ordered a subscription to the Banner for her when she left for Zimbabwe.

That was 15 years ago and through this contact a romance has developed. The man is on holiday with the lady in Zimbabwe at the moment but we will be very interested to learn of their future plans upon their return.
