Pirnmill memorial

-

Sir, I would like to make clear that the war memorial for the fallen of Pirnmill in WWI which was dedicated last week, had nothing to do with North Ayrshire Council and very little to do with Pirnmill Village Association.

The idea was conceived by Miss Fiona Laing, who, having ascertained that the folk in the village thought it was a good idea, did the research, raised the funds, and consulted Mr Simon Horne, a skilled metal worker and Pirnmill resident. With his help a designer was found, and a design created. Miss Laing then proceeded to fund raise. She researched, and delivered a talk about Pirnmill village from its beginnings to the present day, the village contributed what it could, the shop donated the plastic bag money, and after a great deal of hard graft, mainly by Miss Laing, raised the required amount. The village association backed her endeavours and the treasurer was happy to look after the money.

Mrs Sue Furzer created, with the help of willing volunteers, a garden in the wood behind the memorial, the money being raised for that by her baking and selling cakes which were sold to the village.

North Ayrshire Council’s Legacy Fund has provided the money to pay for the post dedication celebration.

Yours,

Christine Black Pirnmill
