Shiskine Burns Supper
Shiskine paid tribute to Scotland’s favourite Bard at their annual Burns Supper where, in a time honoured tradition, visitors celebrated by reciting some of Robert Burns’s works while enjoying a traditional Scottish meal and whisky and the fine company of members of the local community and visitors.
Organised by the Shiskine Hall Committee, and involving many members of the community, the event is held every two years and raises funds for the upkeep and running of the hall.
Addressing the audience of more than 60 attendees, chairman Charles Currie welcomed the visitors and handed the proceedings over to speakers Iain Currie, Fiona Hume and Nicol Hume.
Perfectly demonstrating the sense of community and tradition, the dinner comprised a starter of cock-a-leekie soup, haggis, neeps and tatties, with the haggis supplied by the Arran Butcher, before a dessert of oatcakes from Wooley’s of Arran and cheese from the Isle of Arran Cheese Shop. Crockery and cutlery was provided by the Kinloch Hotel.
Piped in by Rory Currie, Ben, Beth and James McCarthy addressed the haggis and raised their glasses of Irn Bru in a toast. Nicol Hume provided the Toast to Lassies and wife Fiona replied with the Toast to the Lads.
Iain Currie then performed the main speech of the evening, the Immortal Memory, which he accomplished with great aplomb and received an enthusiastic round of applause from the audience.
Following this, a community Tam o’ Shanter was recited by numerous community figures before a Toast to the Hall was performed by Alison Henderson and the thanks done by Nicola Greig.
Nikki and Andy Surridge provided the musical entertainment and Irene Currie offered the vote of thanks. And, as usual the evening concluded with Auld Lang Syne.
