The Arran Banner

Gin School is just the tonic for martini lover

- by Colin Smeeton editor@arranbanner.co.uk

On a quiet Wednesday night back in November, the Gin School Scotland held its first event with minimum fanfare at the Drift Inn, Lamlash, treating handpicked regulars to free craft Scottish gins and banter in return for their feedback on the new venture.

Fast forward to a bustling Friday night at the start of March and the Gin School Scotland was back, this time wowing a sold-out Drift Inn crowd to a fantastic evening of gin, food and live music.

Set up by former whisky distiller and occasional Drift barman, David Hughes, the Gin School’s mission is to inform, educate and entertain. The excellent relationships David has built within the burgeoning Scottish gin sector were in evidence at the event as Colin McLean and Stuart McVicar, head distillers from McLean’s and Biggar gin, were in attendance, telling the unique stories behind their remarkable spirits.

Dealing exclusively in craft Scottish gin and tonics, the Gin School delivers its message through bespoke tasting events nationwide, training for the hospitality sector and lecturing hospitality students at the City College, Glasgow.

Keep an eye on this flourishing Arran-based enterprise as it goes from strength to strength – next up on Arran is an evening showcasing island gins and new season menu at Crofters in Brodick on Tuesday March 26, and a not to be missed G’n’Tees event at Lamlash Golf Club.
