Co-op joins Mary’s Meals to celebrate World Porridge Day
The Co-op in Brodick has shown its support for feeding hungry children by hosting a fundraising event with Mary’s Meals which helped to raise £747.90 for the charity.
Taking place shortly after World Porridge Day, which was on Thursday October 10, the retailer joined with other supporters, Bewitching Beauty Arran and Margaret Kay, and donated a microwave and porridge to the volunteers from Mary’s Meals who hosted a small stall in the Co-op and sold Christmas cards, along with a raffle with the donated prizes.
Adding to the funds raised, Carol and Mark Harwood, who both work in the Co-op, were playing their final gig as Arrannach Ceilidh Band on Saturday night and they, along with fellow founder member, Alistair Paul, donated their fees to Mary’s Meals, saying: ‘It feels good to have the opportunity to contribute, so, thank you.’
Mary’s Meals Arran ambassador, Alison Page, said: ‘Thank you to everyone that contributed to the Mary’s meals fundraiser over the weekend.
And a very special thank you to the Brodick Co-op and Mark, Carol and Alistair, and all of the volunteers.
‘On behalf of Mary’s Meals and all the children that they are helping to feed each school day, your support is much appreciated.’
Mary’s Meals, which has its headquarters in Dalmally, near Oban, feeds more than 1.5 million children in 18 countries around the world every school day.
The money raised from this fundraiser – £747.90 – will provide 10,684 children with a meal in school or feed 53 children for an entire year in school.
