An Ode to Volunteering
Volunteering, what does that mean?
Not everyone gets an MBE from the Queen.
Young or old, you can partake,
Just being neighbourly a person’s day you can make. You may get involved in something formal,
With a sense of satisfaction usually normal.
For the young there is the Saltire award,
With a Young Scot voucher part of the reward.
You could be driving folk to a medical centre,
If you are a Godly person, also praying they soon get better. Delivering papers, food or prescription, Volunteering has many descriptions.
Social isolation can be addressed through befriending, Especially where a person has no access to the web & what’s trending.
What you choose to do could be via the phone,
The Arran Ear & Keep Arran Talking help from feeling alone.
Castles, museum’s & heritage centres,
It’s the volunteers that often make these experiences better. RNLI, Coastguard & Mountain Rescue to name a few, Helping folk out who’ve got in a stew.
Coaching kids for their football or hockey as well,
Or Duke of Edinburgh canoeing showing how to navigate the swell.
The Cadets, teaching discipline, ways of life and all round fun.
There’s a volunteer option for almost everyone. Helping at a music or theatre group, you don’t need to sing, There will be plenty to help with out on the wing. Cooking at a lunch club or serving up teas, Assisting at church & village halls just aiming to please. You could be at ArCaS, COAST, Eco Savvy or gardening the land,
All of them delighted for you to lend a hand.
Beach cleaning, litter picking all for a cause,
Even helping at local events dressed as Santa Claus. Individuals helping out under the radar,
Give yourself a pat on the back you know who you are. So let’s celebrate all of our helpers & volunteers,
For their support & services throughout the years.
