Lasker happy to be Eagles’ father figure

-

AS HE prepares to become a father for the first time, Drew Lasker is looking forward to passing on his experience to a younger, pacier Newcastle Eagles, writes STUART RAYNER.

Fabulous Flournoy has reshaped his squad this year, bringing in Christian Behrens, Deondre Parks and Orlan Jackman.

Yet there is still room for some of the players who have served him so well in the past and guard Lasker has signed up for a fourth consecutive campaign with the British Basketball League side.

Lasker was voted most improved player at the Eagles last season and played an important part in lifting their only silverware, the BBL Cup.

The 33-year old has made more than 370 appearances in British basketball, having also played for Plymouth Raiders.

The Texan, who is due to become a dad for the first time later this year, said: “Even as a 12-year professional I am definitely excited to be returning to the Eagles for my fourth season.

“I am just thankful to be here. I have seen a lot of players come and go so to still be lacing them up after all these years, I am blessed.”

Parks is preparing for his maiden season as a professional while Behrens has only fleeting BBL experience with Surrey.

It means the likes of Lasker, Scott Martin, Rahmon Fletcher and Darius Defoe will have important senior roles.

Lasker added: “I am embracing the challenge to lead the young guys and pass down the things I have learned over the last 12 years.

“I am excited for this season. We have fresh blood, some younger guys with vigour who are going to bring excitement to the fans and also re-ignite the older veterans on the team. I think they are going to fit in very well.”

Fans will get their first opportunity to see the new-look squad on the weekend of September 4/5, when Sport Central hosts the MKM Euro Invitational Tournament.
