Kyra walks into a great chance to build a career

-

MANY would have been disheartened when a lack of funding halted their first real career opportunity dead in its tracks.

But Kyra Bailey, 17, from Stanley, got straight back on the jobs trail, searching – and walking – her way to a new apprenticeship with Prince Bishops Homes.

Kyra said: “I had left college and was on a six-month lettings apprenticeship with an agency. However, following a management review at the end of my apprenticeship, I was told that there were no available funds to create a position for me.

“It was then that I decided to get out there, to look for new opportunities myself.”

Kyra took to both the internet and the street, applying for jobs and walking the local area handing out CVs to businesses.

She added: “I didn’t see any harm in heading out to drop off a few CVs but it was when I handed one into Prince Bishops Homes that

this method proved to be a successful course of action.

“I was invited to meet with sales and marketing director Moya Jones, who told me about the new apprenticeship opportunity they had – which was very much in line with what I had been doing previously.

“After applying formally, I was accepted for the role and I haven’t looked back. I’ve learned a great deal already and the team here have been really supportive.

“The company has a great approach to customer care and I feel honoured to be its first apprentice.”

Kyra is now undertaking an 18-month apprenticeship in business administration with Prince Bishops Homes – which helps and supports people who have a housing need.

She hopes to further her knowledge and secure a career in the industry once her training comes to an end.

Moya Jones said: “We are delighted to bring our first apprentice Kyra on board and have plans to create more apprenticeships, as our operations grow.

“We are passionate about supporting young people who are taking their first steps into the workplace and have devised a programme that can adapt to their differing needs, while offering structured development and training opportunities – including the chance to gain additional NVQ Level 2 qualifications.

“I was immediately impressed with Kyra’s ‘Get up and go’ attitude and the fact that she didn’t let her initial disappointment dent her ambition to work in this industry.

“She is already proving to be a valuable member of the team and has been a real hit with our customers, from whom we’ve had some excellent feedback.”
