Very clever caterpillar show

-

TIMELESS classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar is set to wiggle its way into kids’ hearts once again, this time through the magic of theatre.

The children’s favourite is heading to Northern Stage in Newcastle in a show which will bring the popular tale alive through puppetry.

Created as a picture book by author and illustrator Eric Carle in 1969, the enduring story of how as caterpillar eats its way through all sorts of food then transforms into a butterfly has delighted generations of youngsters.

The book won several awards and has sold more than 41m copies worldwide.

And now Carle’s story is set to be told in a new way to a whole new audience thanks to theatre company MEI Theatrical which is bringing it - and three others - to Northern Stage in May.

The company has adapted four of Carle’s books and alongside The Very Hungry Caterpillar will be The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse; Mister Seahorse and The Very Lonely Firefly.

These have been adapted for the stage with the help of puppets and there will be 75 of them helping to capture Carle’s iconic, colourful world in hand-painted tissue paper collages.

The hour-long show can be seen on May 18 at 1.30pm then on May 19 at 10am and it is recommended for ages three-plus.
