Sailors are getting ready for new season of racing
YOUNG sailors across the region are polishing their boats and dusting off their bouyancy aids as they get ready to do battle with each other, and the weather, during this spring and summer.
No sooner do the clocks go forward than the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) North East Youth Travellers Series 2017 takes to the water.
Sailing clubs throughout the RYA North East Region will host the fleet as it travels around the area, from Kielder Water in the north down to Sheffield in the south.
“I am very pleased to welcome our Youth Travellers Series on to the water again this year,” said Ian Smith, chairman of the RYA North East Region.
“Sailing and competing at different venues, combating different weather conditions on unfamiliar waters are very important lessons for our young sailors as they prepare to take the next steps towards national competitions.
“Over the past ten years, the RYA North East Travellers Series has produced several young sailors who have since gone on to represent the UK in national and international competitions.
“We will be providing coaching at each venue, to hone the skills of the most experienced and to help those sailing away from home for the first time.
“To make life easier for the young sailors, their parents and coaches, the series will be split into northern and southern leagues, so that travelling costs are kept as low as possible.
“However, the youngsters are encouraged to sail at as many venues as possible, both in the north and south of the region and can qualify for prizes in both leagues if desired.”
The final event will be at Ripon Sailing Club on July 8, when the winners of each league will be awarded their trophies.
