Wilson right on cue for a prize double

-

TOP seed Gary Wilson came through a 20-strong field at Whitley Bay SC’s latest one-day handicapped pro-am event to claim first prize and the highest break award.

Wilson, conceding 42 points a frame, went straight on the attack in the final against Durham’s Dale Allan with a break of 93 to race 1-0 ahead.

With Allan having no chances to get his game together, it was Wilson who raced further ahead by rattling off another frame-winning break this time a well-constructed 88 - to go 2-0 up.

Allan had a few shots in the third and added a few points to his 42 but again it was Wilson’s break of 68 plus his earlier run of 34 which gave him the match 3-0 and the £100 prize.

Wallsend potter Wilson made it a successful double by taking the top break prize for a flawless 127 in his first-round match against North Shields’ Craig Sexton.

Receiving seven-points-a-frame start, Morpeth’s Wayne McDonald’s defeated Boldon’s Joe Cromby 2-0 in the plate final .

Two 3-0 victories on the trot earned S/Hirst C the billiards title.

Two points adrift in the runners-up position came long-time leaders Choppington A and third after a 3-0 defeat of S/Hirst A were Vets A.

■■WITH this week’s fixtures the last in the Ashington Chisholm and LWC League and only three points separating the top four teams, it is anyone’s guess which team will take the honours.

In joint first are Whitley Bay A and Seaton Terrace B with 89 points.

Hot their heels in second are Stakeford A (88) and the same distance away and breathing down their necks in third are Newbiggin GC.

■■IN the best-of-five-frame semi-final of the League Singles Championship hosted by Seaton Terrace, Newbiggin GC’s former Northumberland player John McCallum registered a 3-0 win over Guidepost A’s Brian Bickerton.
