Toney buoyed by hot Irons scoring streak

-

IVAN TONEY is determined to make the most of his chance with Scunthorpe and in turn look to impress Rafa Benitez,

The 21-year-old scored twice last weekend as the Irons beat Bradford 3-2 and that takes Toney’s tally up to three goals in ten games.

Toney has found game time hard to come by both at Newcastle United and now at Scunthorpe but he was handed a starting place against Bradford.

The former Barnsley man did not disappoint and his second goal, an improvised bicycle kick, was particularly impressive.

Now the youngster hopes to get a constant run in the team.

Speaking to the Scunthorpe Telegraph, he said: “As a player you want to be starting games and I wanted to repay him by starting me and scoring the goals that led us to a victory.

“It has been very tough not playing the last few games because when you go out on loan you want to be playing games.

“You have got to continue to show positivity and do a job when he does put you in the side and show why he put you in the side.”

Toney clearly hopes his loan spell will provide him with experience and allow him to develop into menacing striker.

He added: “You have got to put yourself about and you come up against big strong defenders who see you as a little boy because of my age.

“I have got to show them I am not a little boy and no pushover. You have got to put yourself around and they will realise you can look after yourself.”
