How many people, in fact, actually knew Roman cavalrymen were ever anywhere near Hadrian’s Wall?
Somehow, when you think of Hadrian’s troops patrolling this North West frontier of the Roman Empire, you imagine them on foot.
Hadrian’s Cavalry starts on April 8 and runs until September 10 at: ■■Arbeia Roman Fort and Museum, Baring Street, South Shields NE33 2BB A SQUADRON of Spanish cavalry was stationed at the fort where archaeological finds have shed light on the cosmopolitan nature of its population. Objects found here will be displayed alongside two outstanding items from elsewhere in the Roman Empire. www.arbeiaromanfort.org.uk ■■Segedunum Roman Fort, Baths and Museum, Buddle Street, Wallsend NE28 6HR THE most completely excavated fort on Hadrian’s Wall has a 35m high tower from which to view outlines of barrack blocks and the stables used to accommodate cavalry horses.
