150 jobs set to be created at call centre site

-

UP to 150 jobs could be created as part of plans to bring a former call centre building back into use.

The site at The Bridges, on Balliol Business Park, Benton Lane, Longbenton, was built in 1999 as an industrial unit before being converted to a call centre in 2002.

It stands vacant but Ashall Property wants to refit the building so it can be used for an industrial purpose.

The firm has submitted a change of use planning application to North Tyneside Council.

It is not known who would occupy the new-look site if the scheme is given the go-ahead.

A planning document for Ashall Property says: “The proposed scheme is to restore the site back to an industrial use for a new tenant with an increase of office space. The building will provide employment for up to 150 people.

“The proposed development makes best use of the existing site and building, returning the vacant unit to an industrial use with provisions for office and service spaces. The building will remain largely unchanged and in keeping, uplifting and updating the external paintwork and allowing for a successful good quality industrial space.”

The scheme is due to be discussed by a planning committee tomorrow and officers are recommending approval.

In their report to the committee, officers said: “Members need to determine whether the proposed development is acceptable in terms of the proposed use, its impact on the character and appearance of the area, its impact on residential amenity and on highway safety.

“It is the view of officers that the development is acceptable.”
