Gunners defender Chambers ‘target’

-

NEWCASTLE United have been linked with a move for Arsenal defender Calum Chambers.

The 22-year-old is understood to be available for £10m according to the Sunday Mirror and the move would only take place if Newcastle win promotion.

Chambers has already experienced life in the North East after spending the season on loan at Middlesbrough, where he has made 21 appearances at the Teesside club so far.

United boss Rafa Benitez has an excellent rapport with Arsene Wenger and the pair did business last summer with the acquisition of Isaac Hayden.

Newcastle will face competition for Chambers from West Ham and Everton, but Benitez’s powers of persuasion could lure the defender north. Chambers can play at centreback or full-back and would be a good addition to the United squad.

Benitez has been keen to keep transfer talk to a minimum as Newcastle hit the final straight in the promotion race.

On Friday, Benitez said: “We continue working and thinking about the future.

“But the priority for us is to be sure we do what we have to do on the pitch.

“I can be talking and telling people whatever I have to say, but the main thing is to be sure that the players and staff, and everyone gives everything.”

Newcastle were been linked with Blackpool youngsters Bright OsayiSamuel in the Sunday papers.
