Body found in the Tyne
Reporter A BODY pulled from the River Tyne in Newcastle is believed to be that of missing Gateshead woman Ellen Mundell.
The 66-year-old went missing from her home in Hookergate on Saturday, and police had been searching for her.
However, at around 7.40am yesterday morning a body was spotted in the Tyne in Newburn.
Emergency services pulled the body from the water and although the body hasn’t been formally identified, Northumbria Police say they believe it to be that of Ellen Mundell.
Ellen’s next of kin have been informed of the discovery and investigations to establish the circumstances around her death are ongoing.
Her disappearance had been described as “completely out of character” and her car, a Ford Focus, was found in the Newburn area of Newcastle at approximately 6pm on Sunday evening.
Officers had been appealing for help in identifying two cyclists who were captured on CCTV cameras in nearby Grange Road on Sunday at around the same time as Ellen’s car was seen parked in the area.
A police spokesman said: “Police searching for missing Gateshead woman Ellen Mundell have found a body. Police believe it to be that of 66-year-old Ellen Mundell, who went missing from her home in Hookergate on Saturday, April 8. The next of kin have been informed.
“Enquiries to formally identify the body, and establish the circumstances around her death, are ongoing.
