MORPETH Town kept their slim Northern League Division One title chances alive, with a 2-1 win at North Shields last night.

It was the visitors who went ahead on 45 minutes, when Joseph Walton scored the opener, when he rounded the keeper and tapped into an empty net.

On 52 minutes, Walton scored his second of the game, to make it 2-0.

North Shields pulled a goal back with seven minutes left on the clock to set up a nervy finale. But Town held on. West Allotment Celtic were hammered 6-1 at home to Penrith, with Martyn Coleman starting and ending the scoring as part of a hat-trick.

In Division Two, Heaton Stanningto­n’s slim promotion chances were ended following a shock 2-1 home defeat to Thornaby.

Heaton took a 20th minute lead thanks to Jonathan Wright’s chip.

In the 74th minute, though, Thornaby equalised following a move down the left which saw the turned into his own net by Ali Stoddart.

And an injury-time penalty, converted by Gary Mitchell gave Thornaby the victory.

The win gave the Teessiders three crucial points in their fight against relegation.

Brandon United are now safe following a 2-0 home win over Ryton and Crawcrook Albion.

Brandon took a 12th minute lead through James Moore, and United went 2-0 up, when Luke Thompson scored a 30-yard free-kick.
