Wallsend’s boys Dan so well to reach Sevens’ national decider
WALLSEND are northern regional champions of the ESFA Danone Under-11 Sevens after a victory at Sunderland AFC’s Academy of Light.
After qualifying on goal difference over West Lancashire as runners-up of group B, Wallsend met Chester the winners of Group A - in the semis.
Chester were the fancied team, having beaten both Liverpool and Sheffield in the group stage.
Nevertheless, Wallsend turned the heat up and in a very tense match ended up deserved victors.
This meant they had already qualified for the National Finals but had to meet Middlesbrough, impressive in their defeat of Leeds in the other semi, in the decider to determine who would be northern champions.
In a hard-fought match, Wallsend were victorious 1-0.
This is the first time the North Tynesiders have made the Finals.
Spokesman Ian Fairhurst said: “Wallsend are one of the smallest county teams in England so to be crowned top under-11 side in the north of England is a fantastic achievement.”
Wallsend travel to Stoke on Saturday May 20.
They have been offered tracksuits and polo shirts for the big day by local businesses.
Rayfire Servies and NE-IT have provided sponsorship and Newcastle Benfield FC have offered their mini bus for the trip to the Potteries.
