Stars to line up for Srnicek tribute game

- By LEE RYDER

A HOST of former Newcastle United players will line up to pay tribute to Pavel Srnicek on July 9.

Former Toon stars such as Steve Harper, Steve Howey, Darren Peacock and Nobby Solano are just a few of the names who have confirmed their involvement in a fund-raising close-season game against Felling FC at Dunston’s UTS Stadium.

This year’s Pavel Cup, the second annual event played in memory of the former Newcastle United goalkeeper, takes on an extra meaning as it coincides with the 10th anniversary of the passing of former Felling striker Chris Heron.

All funds from the game will be donated to St Oswald’s Hospice.

Match organiser Steve Wraith said: “Last year’s event was a real success and we raised over £3,000 for St Oswald’s Hospice.

“It would be great to raise a little more this year. The lads all give their time for free and every penny goes to the cause.

“It felt right to pay tribute to my good friend Chris Heron this year.

“Never a day goes by without me thinking of both Chris and Pav and I am sure the public will turn out in their hundreds to celebrate their respective lives.”

Siobhan Sargeant, corporate fundraiser for St Oswald’s Hospice, added: “We are really looking forward to the second Pavel Cup this July. “Last year’s event was fantastic. “The event celebrated the life of Pavel and also raised £5000 for St Oswald’s Hospice which was a charity close to the heart of Pavel and his family. We are honoured to be the beneficiaries of the year’s event.

“St Oswald’s Hospice relies on the support of local communities to raise the £8 million each year we need to keep the charity going.

“Thanks to all involved in this event for your support.”

The event takes place on July 9 and gates open at noon.

Tickets for the event are available now priced at £8 for adults and £3.50 for under-16’s and can be purchased from www. newcastlelegends.com
