MORE than 2,000 people pulled on their running shoes for one of the region’s most scenic road races on Easter Sunday.

The popular North Tyneside 10k Road Race - held for the 13th time was sold out months ago.

And as the event kicked off at the Parks Sports Centre in North Shields, hundreds turned out to watch and cheer on the competitors.

The runners made their way towards the Fish Quay and Tynemouth Priory, then took in a stretch of coastline before finishing at St Mary’s Lighthouse in Whitley Bay.

The race also passed the Spanish City funfair on the Links, which came to Whitley Bay for its annual Easter visit.

The 6.2-mile race was won by Tadele Geremew in a time of 33 minutes and seven seconds. This is the fourth time he has won the event.

And the first female over the line was Alison Dargie in a time of 38 minutes and 14 seconds. In the men’s race, David Green was second, with Sparrow Morley in third. Meanwhile, the second female over the line was Lorna Macdonald with Sarah Robson finishing third.

A spokesman for North Tyneside Council, which organised the run, said: “This was an Easter Sunday sell-out with fun runners and competitive athletes alike, keen to tackle what is one of the most scenic yet challenging road races in the UK. All competitors received a race T-shirt and their finish time by text message.”

The race was supported by Start Fitness and Northumbria Spring, who supplied the drinking water along the route.
