We were Amaz-ed

We review Ed Sheeran's first night at the Arena

-

HE is the boy who can do no wrong and last night Ed Sheeran quite simply took Newcastle’s breath away.

The setting was quite simple – Ed, his array of guitars and a mic. That was enough – the Metro Radio Arena was captivated.

People say ‘no I would not want to see him live, would be dull.’ Trust us. He is not. It was a show none of of us wanted to end.

Opening with Castle on the Hill, the crowd was his from the word go.

Each and every song the crowd was singing with him. Word for word.

He spoke about man flu, saying he had been suffering in the run up to the show – it did not show.

Sheeran spoke about his love for the north and described his shows up here as ‘more nuts every time he comes.’

He said all he wanted from the crowd was volume – ‘give me volume’ he told the arena.

That is what he received throughout. His songs sang back at him – each and every one. A highlight was the mix-up of Don’t and New Man.

They worked perfect together and this was followed by the sublime Dive.

He duck and dived out of each of his three albums – with a bit of beautiful nostalgia from + and some gems from X and plenty from the breathtaking, record breaking Divide.

Bloodstream was something very special as well as Photograph and Shape of You.

Thinking Out Loud was, as predicted, quite simply stunning. The arena was smitten.

Any negatives? Yes – it was not long enough. He would have had us in there into the early hours.

From everyone at the arena thank you Mr Sheeran for a great nght

Is the man worth the hype, the countless number one singles, the awards, the records he has broken? Well thinking out loud – I am going to have to say a resounding yes.
