A pictorial trip to the Noughties

- By IAN ROBSON Reporter ian.robson@trinitymirror.com

HERE are more pictures to make you feel old.

This time we’re in the Noughties – the years between 2000 and 2010 – in our search of images to encourage you to remember when things seemed so much simpler.

It might only seem like yesterday when some of these pictures were taken but a lot of water has gone under the bridge.

ON YER BYKER

The Noughties were the decade the BBC pulled the plug on Byker Grove after 18 seasons and 344 episodes.

The teen drama gave us the first glimpses of stars like Ant and Dec, Jill Halfpenny, Donna Air, and Andrew Hayden-Smith.

The last ever broadcast was in 2006.

WAS IT THAT LONG SINCE ALNWICK GARDEN WAS OPENED?

The garden as we know it was opened in 2001, with the water cascade becoming one of the first highlights, before growing to become one of the North East’s best attractions

The famous tree house did not follow for another three years.

NEW FACES RIGHT OR WONGA?

They were the face of debts company Wonga, who burst on the scenes in 2007.

They became shirt sponsors for Newcastle United but were controversial because of high interest rates.

The use of cartoon characters was said to encourage people to take out loans they could not afford to pay back.

HOWZAT FOR A BIT OF CRICKET HISTORY?

It was in 2003 that Durham County Cricket Club became a senior member of the Twenty20 circuit.

In the same year the Riverside at Chester-le-Street hosted its first Test in which England took on Zimbabwe.

FOND MEMORIES OF THE SWEET COUNTER AT WOOLWORTHS

And that’s all they are now – just fond memories.

The chain, which had many stores in the North East, went out of business in 2008.

That’s only nine years ago but the name is firmly rooted in nostalgia.

Our picture shows the one in Northumberland Street, Newcastle.

WHAT HAPPENED AFTER THE LAST MORSE?

The Remorseful Day saw the last episode of the TV series starring John Thaw as Morse and fan-favourite Geordie Kevin Whatley as his sidekick Lewis.

Morse was killed off in 2000 but the way was left open for Kevin to return in his own series.

DID YOU CELEBRATE WHEN THE POLICE GOT BACK TOGETHER?

Sting used to be known as part of The Police before launching a very successful solo career.

But he got back with his former pals for a reunion tour in 2007 to 2008.

WHAT WAS HAPPENING WITH BIG BROTHER IN THE NOUGHTIES?

Is it really that long since a 70s-style dancer and trainee barber won 2005’s Big Brother?

Antony Hutton, from Consett, walked away with the top prize in what was an exciting year for fans.

You do remember Hutton in the hot tub with Makosi Musambasi, don’t you?

POTTER MANIA WAS JUST MAGIC

It was the decade that saw the last four books of the Harry Potter series published. Newcastle was not immune to the midnight launches that saw queues of eager fans outside bookshops waiting for the latest novel.

JK Rowling was a frequent visitor to the region on her promotion tours.

But it is ten years since Harry Potter of the Deathly Hallows was first on the shelves in 2007.
