BEST BUYS IS THAT YOUR BECKS DRESS VICTORIA?

EMMA JOHNSON picks Out HER SPRING must-buys from the HIGH street

- EMMA JOHNSON

IF DAVID’S hacked emails are to be believed, getting an honour from the Queen is a big deal in the Beckham household. At the time the former footballer’s people said the emails were “hacked”, “doctored” and “private”.

But I can’t help but think the scandal earlier this year cast a shadow over wife Victoria receiving her OBE from the Duke of Cambridge this week. Why else would the mother-of-four have turned up dressed like she was going to a funeral?

Fashion designers love to show off their wares and VB usually does at every available opportunity, from dinner dates to airports.

Yet, for her trip to Buckingham Palace this week, she picked out the most plain of designs.

Her midnight-blue knitted, long-sleeved midi dress, from her own collection, may have been beautifuly tailored, but it hardly had me rushing out to buy one.

She didn’t even wear a hat, opting instead for a messy bun.

Muted as the ensemble was, the message it was giving off couldn’t have been clearer had she taken to the roof of Buck House with a megaphone.

She and Becks even travelled to the ceremony with a sheet over them in the back of their Rolls, and I have yet to see any official photos of her posing with her medal, only her picture on her Instagram.

Curiously, none of the Beckham’s children was at the event either.

It appears the message from the 43-year-old is that she is happy to be honoured but – ironically for someone who found fame in a girlband – she was not going to make a song and dance about it and prove the family’s critics right.

And boy there are enough of those. Just look at the comments sections of certain online publications.

The 43-year-old who picked up the gong for her services to the fashion industry said afterwards that she was ‘honoured and humbled’ adding that she was ‘proud to be British’.

She gushed: “If you dream big and work hard you can accomplish great things. I’m so happy to share this very special occasion with my parents and husband.”

Ah yes David. He picked up his own OBE in 2003 and maybe didn’t get the memo about ‘muted attire’ choosing to dress up for the occasion in an impeccably cut slim grey suit and tie and showcasing his new longer, quiffed hair-do.

I actually feel bad for Victoria. This should have been her moment but she was robbed of fully enjoying it. Whether you blame her husband for that or criminal hackers depends where your own sympathies lie, and who you believe.

When Dame Vivenne Westwood accepted her OBE from the Queen in 1992, the punk designer twirled for waiting photographers and revealed she had left her underwear at home.

At least there was never going to be any of that from Mrs B. To quote the Spice Girls hit Wannabe, ‘easy V doesn’t come for free she’s a real lady...’.
