Blaydon Race lands sponsorship boost from recycling firm

-

BLAYDON Harriers have received a timely boost with local company J&J Stanley Recycling agreeing to come on board to sponsor the iconic Blaydon Race.

With the costs of putting on the second biggest road race in the region after the Great North Run rising substantially, the backing of the Blaydon-based company comes as a huge relief, especially to race director Lynn Craig who has been at the helm of the famous Geordie race for the past five years.

“It’s a huge weight off my shoulders having a sponsor, not just for myself but for all at Blaydon Harriers who work their socks off every year to make the ‘Blaydon’ a success,’’ said Lynn after meeting up with the company’s owner Gordon Stanley at their Blaydon depot.

“We at Blaydon Harriers are extremely grateful that J&J Stanley have decided to back the race and we really appreciate their support.

“The ‘Blaydon’ is a club race put together by volunteers, and again Blaydon Race director Lynn Harding meets Gordon Stanley of new race sponsors J&J Stanley Recycling we are delighted with the response from the athletes from local clubs.

“Unfortunately, as is the norm now, we are oversubscribed, with the 4,600 entries being snapped up within an hour of being released, but we now know that those who make the start line will be ‘Gannin Alang Scotswood Road A’ll With Smilin’ Faces!’’’

It’s becoming increasingly difficult in the current financial climate for businesses to put their hands in their pockets to help worthy causes.

However, J&J Stanley had no hesitation in supporting the ‘Blaydon’ when they were approached.

“We understand fully the financial strain voluntary groups are under at the moment, so when we were asked if we could do anything to help the Blaydon Race we had no hesitation in saying ‘yes’,” said Gordon Stanley.

“Mind, Lynn can be quite persuasive when it comes to making a deal, especially when I thought that was my domain.

“The Blaydon Race anthem is known throughout the world and the race itself is the highlight for many local runners and for hundreds of spectators who gather at the finish line.

“So, being a local business, we are proud to be able to give our support on what we hope will be a night to remember for everyone.’’
