Press politicians for their policies

-

SO we are to have a General Election. You have to admire Theresa May’s timing – she has the most to gain and it’s not the ideal time for anyone else.

Inevitably ‘Brexit’ will be a big part of the debate but I hope voters will probe candidates about policy on matters affecting family life.

For example what do the parties say about the following:

Support for families with babies and small children after so many Children’s Centres have closed. Family friendly employment policies so parents have time to spend with their children.

Funding schools so that they can employ enough teachers and classroom assistants.

Working parents whose children are not eligible for Free School Meals but cannot afford to pay for school dinners – some are having to use food banks. Parents who rely on Free School Meals for their children during term going hungry during the school holidays.

Reducing the stress placed on young people by school examinations and the pressure for academic excellence.

Community activities run by good role models so children and young people can learn life skills and test themselves.

Apprenticeships, training and work experience for school leavers who don’t want to go to university. And affordable housing for young people.
